Phillipsburg High School Rodeo
A high school rodeo will be held at the Phillipsburg arena May 4-5, 2012. This is the seventeenth year the rodeo will be held.
It is hosted by the Kansas' Biggest Rodeo committee men and volunteers who do everything from running the concession stand and loading livestock to pulling gates, setting barrels and sorting cattle.
It is only one of five approved rodeos for the spring season of the 2011-2012. Kansas High School Rodeo Association, and it has won the Kansas High School Rodeo of the Year award nine times.
The committee works hard, knowing that their labor goes for something the kids enjoy. They consider this a “break-even event” and never make any money on it. They get great pleasure, knowing they are providing a venue for high school rodeo and they hope the high school contestants return to compete as pro rodeo members at Kansas' Biggest Rodeo each summer.
High School Prom
It’s not just rodeo in Phillipsburg! The high school kids enjoy rodeo prom when they are in Phillipsburg. Kids look forward to it all year and dress in their formals (with the boys in western attire) for the prom.
There is no budget for high school prom, so moms and dads borrow the prom decorations after a school has finished theirs. They dismantle decorations then reassemble them in Phillipsburg. Sponsors provide pizza and pop for the meal, and t-shirts for giveaways, and a local dj plays the music.
College Rodeo Scholarship
Each year, Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo presents a scholarship to Ft. Hays (Kan.) State University Rodeo Club, to be given to two Kansas students competing in rodeo. One thousand dollars is split between two students, a boy and a girl.
