Joni Lea Hilburn
The 2008 Phillipsburg Rodeo Queen is Joni Lea Hilburn. The daughter of Jace Hilburn and Julie Hilburn, Joni is from Almena , Kansas . She is a freshman at Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis , Nebraska , where she is majoring in agribusiness. After graduation from Curtis, she plans to get an elementary education degree at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
Joni was horseback before she could walk. As a young child, her grandfather gave her a red dun mare named Lucky, who she still rides. For the queen competition, she rode a three year old gelding named A.J. In her corral two more horses can be found: Bandit, a green broke four year old gelding, and Fool, a two year old gelding out of Lucky.
When Joni isn't with her horses, she likes to ride motorcyles, four-wheelers, and hunt and fish.
Joni is a member of the Prairie Duster Drill Team of Phillipsburg and a member of the Congregational Church of Almena. She participates on the Student Senate and Agribusiness and Farmers Bureau Clubs in college.
Being a rodeo queen has long been a dream of Joni's. “My first memory is of that pretty queen racing around the arena horseback,” she comments. “Since then I have learned that it goes so much deeper than just a flashy smile and a big wave.” As the 2008 Phillipsburg Rodeo Queen, Joni will serve as an ambassador for pro rodeo and for Kansas ' Biggest Rodeo.
